Matthew Mudget – Percussion Instructor & Music Teacher
Traverse City/Greenville/Grand Rapids, Michigan

Passionate about fostering resilience, creativity, and community through music, Matthew Mudget is an aspiring music educator with a deep commitment to helping students of all backgrounds discover their potential. Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education at Central Michigan University, Matthew has gained extensive hands-on experience in both percussion instruction and band leadership through various roles across Michigan.

Growing up in Traverse City, Michigan, Matthew’s journey into music education has been shaped by a unique set of life experiences. Raised by a single mother who ran a daycare, he learned early on how to interact with children and adapt to challenging environments. A difficult childhood—marked by hardship and instability—instilled in him qualities such as perseverance, empathy, and the importance of structure. These life lessons not only guide him as a teacher but also inspire his desire to create a positive, supportive space for students to grow, no matter their background or personal challenges.

Matthew’s music education experience spans a variety of roles, from drumline instructor to percussion lesson teacher, working with high school and middle school students in districts including Midland, Lansing, Traverse City, and more. His work with diverse student groups has helped him understand the importance of building both technical skills and personal confidence, fostering students’ love for music and encouraging their creativity in every rehearsal.

As a leader, Matthew has served in several influential positions, including State Collegiate President for the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), where he organized events and led collaborative projects for aspiring music educators. His involvement in national music conferences such as PASIC, the Michigan Music Conference, and the Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic allows him to stay current on innovative teaching practices and trends in music education.

Matthew’s philosophy as an educator is rooted in his own growth journey. Having faced personal challenges, he understands the power of a growth mindset and the importance of fostering a supportive and structured learning environment. He believes in empowering students to embrace their potential, build discipline, and develop a love for music that transcends the classroom.

Whether leading percussion ensembles, organizing events, or guiding students through their musical development, Matthew is committed to creating inclusive and dynamic music programs where every student has the opportunity to thrive.
